Hiring for Character: The Missing Piece

Skills can be taught. Character is foundational.

In a skills-obsessed market, character is often treated as a "nice to have." But ask any experienced leader what caused their last bad hire, and it's rarely a lack of technical skill. It's almost always a character issue.

    The Cost of Low Character

High-competence, low-character employees are dangerous. They can deliver short-term results, but they often leave a trail of toxicity, broken trust, and burned-out teammates in their wake.

We define character not just as "being a good person," but as a set of professional virtues:

    • Integrity: Doing what you say you will do.
    • Accountability: Owning mistakes without blame-shifting.
    • Resilience: Bouncing back from setbacks with a positive attitude.
    • Humility: Being open to learning and feedback.

    How to Assess Character

Character is harder to screen for than coding skills or sales figures, but it's not impossible. It requires moving beyond the standard script.

    Look for:

    • Consistency: Do their stories match their references?
    • Self-awareness: Can they speak honestly about their weaknesses?
    • Treatment of others: How do they treat the receptionist? The scheduler?
